Gurley also made a lot of specialty instruments on government contracts such as spotting scopes, targeting scopes, etc.
From 1845 until 1980 Gurley made many different models of compasses, levels, transits, and hand tools. We could not possibly cover all of them in our website so we are going to concentrate mainly on the survey instruments and tools.
Below are a few samples of some Gurley tools.
We may add others as time permits.
Initially Gurley basically made 3 models of the surveyors' staff compasses and used these designs for many years. They did add a few other compasses know as the Solar Compass and a series of smaller Pocket Compasses. Below you will find some illustrations and photos of some of these compasses.
Plain Surveyors CompassThe Plain Compass came in several sizes based on the length of the needle. These sizes included a 4 inch needle, 5 inch needle, and a 6 inch needle. On the left is an illustration directly out of a Gurley Catalog and the images on the right is a photographs of an actual Gurley Plain compass.
