Nice 1909 Keuffel & Esser U.S. - C.G.S Precise Level

These levels were designed by the US Coast & Geodetic Survey around 1900.

$795.00

Description:

This is a nice K&E US-C.G.S. Precise Level model #5027.  These were designed by the Coast & Geodetic Survey around 1900 and built by several different makers.  This is an early K&E version made in 1909.  It has the lighter color as the later models came in black.  None of the different makers made a lot of these as it is considered a specialized type of instrument.  Since these instruments are so specialized it makes them difficult to find if you are looking to add a unique instrument to your collection.

This instrument is heavy weighing around 25lbs. and measures about 16" long.  The design of this instrument calls for it to be made out of Nickel iron and Nickel steel which is why it is so heavy.  These two components have a very low expansion/contraction rate of less than .000004 per degree of Centigrade.  It also has a built in micrometer to make the instrument even more accurate than the plain Dumpy or even Wye levels of the time.

These are great collectables and if you want a unique instrument than this one is for you.
