This is one of the hardest Solar Attachments to find. These were
not very popular so there were just not many ever made. The Smith side
mount solar attachment was the style Young sold the most of for solar
instruments.
Benjamin Smith patented this solar attachment in 1880
and not long after Young started selling them as a side mount unit. It
wasn't until several years later that they added the top mount version.
We are estimating the age of this solar attachment from the late 1890's
to the early 1900's This style is shown in the 1911 catalog.
