Lietz Cyclotomic Transit

California, USA

This is a very rare and beautiful 1895 Cyclotomic Transit made by the Adolph Lietz Company.

The Cyclotomic transits are very unique in design and if you will note they do not have the typical lower lock and motion like most transits made in that era.

Elliot Bros.  Eckhold Tangent Tacheometer
Serial Number 446

Invented by Charles Eckhold in 1868. The Omnimeter Tacheometer was used with a topographic rod with twin Target plates – essentially vertical subtense measurement. The tangent scale simplified calculations by dispensing with Trig. Tables & Slide Rules.

A similar instrument was owned by George Shattuck Morison (1842-1903), a prominent US civil engineer and bridge builder and currently resides in the Smithsonian.
